Gene Ammons • The Happy Blues

 Review by Scott Yanow
The Happy Blues is one of the great studio jam sessions in history. Tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons is teamed up with trumpeter Art Farmer, altoist Jackie McLean, pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Addison Farmer, drummer Art Taylor, and the congas of Candido for four lengthy selections. Best is the title track, which has memorable solos and spontaneous but perfectly fitting riffing by the horns behind each others' solos. The other numbers ("The Great Lie," "Can't We Be Friends," and "Madhouse") are also quite enjoyable, making this a highly recommended set.

Duke Jordan • Flight To Denmark

Review by Michael G. Nastos
Upon Duke Jordan's initial visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by his decision to make the move as an expatriate permanent, he was tempted to stay by playing with some extraordinary Scandinavian rhythm sections. Bassist Mads Vinding, one of many skilled Danish jazz bassists, is here on the date performing in fine style. Drummer Ed Thigpen, who left the U.S. to take up permanent residence in Europe, was an even bigger influence in making Jordan's decision a good one, and is an equally skillful musical partner on this date. This is an expanded edition from the previous original issue on the Steeplechase label; a Japanese import with several alternate takes. It's an understated session for the most part, equal parts melancholy and hopeful, as one might expect with the trepidation of leaving home for new, unknown horizons to be discovered in a foreign land. The upbeat songs, as the modal, popping, tom-tom driven "No Problem" (from the movie soundtrack Les Liason Dangereuses) and the famous bop flag-waver "Jordu," bookend the CD. The bulk of the recording showcases the softer side of Jordan, with takes of the somber ballad "Here's That Rainy Day," the slightly brighter "Everything Happens to Me," and two versions of the polite waltz "Glad I Met Pat," dedicated to a nine-year-old girl Jordan knew in New York City prior to her being kidnapped. The pianist employs chiming piano chords for "How Deep Is the Ocean?," is lighthearted in his slight interpretation of the well worn "On Green Dolphin Street," does two takes on the light, bluesy swinger "If I Did, Would You?," and ramps up to midtempo the bluesy original "Flight to Denmark," reflective of the insecurity and consequential optimism that followed his leaving the States. This is Duke Jordan at his most magnificent, with the ever-able Vinding and expert Thigpen playing their professional roles perfectly, producing perhaps the second best effort (next to Flight to Jordan from 13 years hence) from the famed bop pianist.

Duke Jordan • Wait and See

Recorded at the same Copenhagen session that resulted in "Tivoli One" and "Tivoli Two," this trio set -- reissued on CD with two additional selections -- features pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Wilbur Little and drummer Dannie Richmond on seven Jordan originals (including his famous "Jordu"), "Misty" and "Out of Nowhere." Another excellent bop-oriented Duke Jordan session, one of many for SteepleChase.

Dizzy Reece • Comin' On

Review
by Al Campbell
For a short time in the late '50s trumpeter Dizzy Reece was an up-and-coming jazz artist. However, success eluded him and he quietly faded into obscurity, only occasionally releasing material after the early '60s. As a matter of fact, the sessions that became Comin' On! languished in the Blue Note vaults for almost four decades. Rediscovered in 1999, these dates feature six well-rounded hard bop compositions by Reece along with three standards. The tracks from April 3, 1960, not only document the Blue Note debut of tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine but also employ the talents of the Jazz Messengers' rhythm section of the time, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt, and drummer Art Blakey. By July 17, 1960, the only musician remaining from the previous date was Turrentine, sharing tenor duties with Musa Kaleem, who is also heard on flute. (The later session's rhythm section had changed to pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Al Harewood.) Neglected, although spirited, sessions from an underrated trumpeter and composer.

Charlie Parker • Bird On 52nd Street

Review by Scott Yanow
Altoist Charlie Parker plays quite brilliantly on this live set with trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Max Roach but the recording quality is consistently crummy and sometimes borders on the unlistenable. In fact, if it featured any other player but Bird, the music would certainly have not been released. For true Charlie Parker completists only.

Review
by Ken Dryden
This 1975 session features Duke Jordan with fellow expatriate Ed Thigpen on drums and bassist Mads Vinding. The pianist began a long working relationship with Steeplechase in the early '70s that produced a number of recordings by the end of the decade. The trio works well together playing play Jordan's compositions, most of which were likely new, though there are no liner notes to provide background on the music. Although the eight originals performed on this session (with two alternate takes added for the CD reissue) never became very well known as his hit "Jordu," there are a number of enjoyable tunes, including the soft ballad "32nd Street Love," the swaggering bop vehicle "Truth," and "Hymn to Peace," which begins in a meditative mood before switching gears to a breezy setting with Vinding's tasty solo.

Sonny Stitt • Sonny Stitt & The Top Brass

Review by Scott Yanow
This LP features altoist Sonny Stitt accompanied by a nonet playing arrangements by either Tadd Dameron or Jimmy Mundy. The charts give this Stitt album more variety than usual, and the superior material (which includes "On a Misty Night," "Poinciana" and Stitt's "Hey Pam") challenges the saxophonist to play at his best; trumpeter Blue Mitchell also has a couple of spots.

Duke Jordan • Flight To Jordan

Review
by Scott Yanow
Duke Jordan, who played regularly with the Charlie Parker Quintet in 1947, was long known as a superior bebop pianist whose style was touched by the genius of Bud Powell's innovations. This quintet album, also featuring trumpeter Dizzy Reece and the young tenor Stanley Turrentine, gave Jordan an opportunity to record six of his originals and, although none became as well-known as his "Jordu," the music has plenty of strong melodies and variety. This is one of Duke Jordan's better recordings and is quite enjoyable. [Some reissues include "Diamond Stud" and "I Should Care" as bonus tracks.]

Charlie Parker • Bird Symbols

Review by AllMusic
The sound quality on this album of Parker's Dial mid-'40s Dial material lacks the precision and clarity of his later Verve sessions. Much of the original source material disappeared when Dial went out of business, and, from the remaining masters, a good deal has been lost in the subsequent transfer and re-issue. Still, barring some distortion and a kind of hollow, muffled quality, Parker is in superior form as an artist on these tracks. The mid-'40s seems to be the time Bird hit his stride, and these tracks serve as no subtle reminder that Parker was not only a great innovator, but an incredibly emotional and soulful player, a fact often overshadowed by his technical prowess.

These qualities are highlighted in the collection's ballads "Embracable You," "Out of Nowhere," and "Don't Blame Me," while breakneck bebop workouts are represented as well in "Moose the Mooche," "Bird's Nest" and the dizzying "Ornithology." Parker is joined by a young Miles Davis on many of these sessions, whose acerbic, forward-thinking style provides wonderful balance to Parker's fluid alto. While the sound quality may not be pristine, these are still fine performances; and of interest to Parker collectors searching for his harder-to-procure Dial sessions.https://www.allmusic.com/album/bird-symbols-mw0000192338

Cecil Payne • Patterns of Jazz

Review by Jim Todd
This 1956 set partners baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne with the superb rhythm section of pianist Duke Jordan, drummer Art Taylor, and bassist Tommy Potter. Their performances of originals, standards, and a pair of Randy Weston compositions are unpretentious bop artistry of a high caliber. Jordan and Potter played together in Charlie Parker's quintet of the late '40s and are well-equipped to meet the demands of bebop. The pianist's economical, swinging style falls somewhere between Count Basie's and Thelonious Monk's. Like them, Jordan is supremely skilled at saying a lot with a little. His open approach leaves plenty of space for the unassuming virtuosity of Potter and Taylor. Potter, in particular, merits close attention. He is a master of the walking bass, spilling out a relentless four to the bar with the precision of a Swiss timepiece and the obsession of one whose calling is, above all, to swing and to swing righteously. Payne's conception is the opposite of the big-throated, baritone sax roar of his Savoy labelmate Pepper Adams. Rather, his light tone calls to mind Lester Young's tenor sax, a parallel that is most apparent on Payne's extended solo on his ballad treatment of "How Deep Is the Ocean." On four of the eight tracks on this 1991 CD reissue the quartet is joined by trumpeter Kenny Dorham, who is in excellent form, adding a high-energy second voice to the frontline and a fearless chorus on the quintet's version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High." For listeners who have yet to become acquainted with Cecil Payne, this classic mid-'50s Savoy recording would make a good introduction.

How Deep Is the Ocean».
